and James Till
Dr. Crumley has a lifelong interest in disorders of the
Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve (RLN)
- the nerve that causes the movement of the vocal cords
and allows us to create voice. Much of this interest
is focused on the problem of Vocal Cord Paralysis, and
resulted in his initial ground breaking research in laryngeal re-innervation. This research resulted in a new approach
to the management of vocal cord paralysis, by using the
a nerve in the neck (ansa
cervicalis nerve) to replace the
injured/damaged
RLN. This operation, pioneered at
U.C.
Irvine, results in a re-innervated vocal cord. Several
centers in the U.S., Europe, and Asia have switched to
laryngeal reinnervation for management of vocal cord
paralysis, (from the previous older techniques of Teflon
injection, Fat injection, and
Gelfoam
injection).
Current Dr. Crumley
is a member of a research team
studying the effects of
reinnervation
vs
Medialization
thyroplasty
in a study at UC Irvine, and several other U.S.
Universities.
