Roger L. Crumley M.D., M.B.A.

Professor and Chairman Emeritus

Area of Specialty:

Facial Plastic Surgery, Laryngology, Sleep Disorders

Dr. Roger L. Crumley is a graduate of the University of Iowa Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Residency Training Program. Following graduation (1975) he joined the faculty of the University of California, San Francisco where he progressed to the level of Clinical Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. In October 1987 he accepted the position of Professor & Chief of Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at UCI Medical Center. He remained Chairman of the Department of the same name until July 2007 when he stepped down as chair.

Dr. Crumley has pursued his 3 key areas of interest of Facial Plastic Surgery, Laryngology, Voice Disorders, and Sleep Disorders at UCI for the past 27+ years. His interest in reinnervation of the paralyzed vocal cord (larynx) has resulted in many referrals to UCI from around the U.S., U.K., and Europe. He is recognized nationally and internationally for the numerous lectures and courses he has given on the topic of vocal fold paralysis in venues such as Russia, France, Germany, Italy, Turkey, Mexico, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, and China. The surgical procedure he pioneered introduced the newer concept of using nerve microsurgery to restore a viable nerve supply to a paralyzed larynx, in contradistinction to the prior approaches of injecting or implanting the larynx to move the paralyzed vocal fold into a more appropriate position.

Dr. Crumley was also the co-founder of the Neurolaryngology Study Group, an international think tank for physicians and other scientists interested in neural disorders of the larynx. To this day his practice in the UCI Voice and Swallowing Center involves evaluation of voice disorders of all kinds, as well as, the management of sleep disorders such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

Dr. Crumley’s career highlights include election to a 12 year term on the American Board of Otolaryngology (the ABMS certifying organization for Otolaryngology-HNS), as well as serving as President of 3 national societies in Otolaryngology:

  • American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (1995)
  • Triological Society (the senior scholastic society in Otolaryngology-HNS) (2003)
  • American Laryngological Association (2008)
