The Department of Otolaryngology
– Head and Neck Surgery offers a postdoctoral fellowship each year in facial
plastic and reconstructive surgery. This
fellowship has been an integral part of the department since 1987, and it has
been most beneficial to both the department and the UCI Medical Center.
Cosmetic and Reconstructive facial plastic surgery is an important part of the
specialty of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, comprising 25% of our
didactic curriculum as well as 25% of the content of the American Board of
Otolaryngology’s certifying exam. The FPRS fellow is given a one year academic
appointment as a clinical instructor.
Dr. Tim Kelley became director of UCI’s
facial plastic surgery fellowship program in October 2003.
The primary preceptors for the
program are Dr. Roger L. Crumley, Professor and Chairman, Brian Wong, MD, Mark
Krugman MD, and Norman Ge MD. The
fellowship is comprised of both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery done at
UCIMC with Drs. Brian Wong, Roger Crumley, Art Salibian,
and Jason Kim. Many cosmetic procedures are performed with Drs. Mark Krugman,
Dr. Tim Kelley, Dr. Pete Giammanco, and other local area facial plastic
surgeons..
Generally, the first few months are primarily spent observing the
preceptors and developing cases through the Fellow’s Clinic at the University of California, Irvine.
With increasing experience, the fellow performs his or her own cases
under direct supervision at the University
of California, Irvine and Western Medical Center,
Santa Ana. With increased knowledge and experience, the
fellow performs surgery and teaches residents at UCI Medical
Center, Kaiser-Lakeview,and Long
Beach Veterans Affairs Medical
Center. Additional reconstructive experience is
gained through working with Art Salibian and Jason
Kim, whose combined experience make them the most experienced free-flap
reconstructive surgeons in Orange County.
This multidisciplinary group maintains prosthetic and general
reconstructive surgery of the head and neck.
Other secondary preceptors are drawn from faculty members at the University of California, Irvine.
The fellowship also includes
participation in the educational program at UCI,
formal presentations, and collaboration in basic and clinical research. Upon completion of the fellowship year, the
fellow is eligible to sit for the certification examination of the American
Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
When selecting candidates for the fellowship, priority is
given to individuals planning on an academic career in Otolaryngology – Head
and Neck Surgery. Individuals who have
already obtained an academic job commitment will be given highest
priority. Not every applicant will be
interviewed. Interviews are carried out
by May of the year preceding the fellowship year.
