Dr. Tjoa

Dr. Tjoa is an Associate Clinical Professor of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at the University of California Irvine School of Medicine. He is a fellowship-trained surgeon who specializes in the surgical treatment of head and neck cancer, advanced skin cancer surgery, major reconstructive surgery using microvascular techniques, and transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for the treatment of HPV-positive throat cancers. He also performs a high volume of thyroid surgery, salivary gland surgery, and open skull base surgery.

Dr. Tjoa has a vested interested in patient and peer education and has received numerous clinical and teaching awards throughout his career. He has been named to the Southern California Rising Stars list several years in a row and is an Orange County Medical Association Physician of Excellence, both of which are awards nominated by other physicians. He previously served as Medical Student Director and Residency Director, and is now serving as the Interim Chair for the Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery. His research interests include outcomes in microvascular reconstructive surgery and disparities in head and neck cancer care. He is involved in multiple multidisciplinary clinical trials at UC Irvine in conjunction with the Chao Comprehensive Cancer Center, including several “treatment de-escalation” trials that aim to reduce the side effects of head and neck cancer treatment.

Dr. Tjoa received his undergraduate degree in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of California at Berkeley. He went on to receive his medical degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in Richmond, Virginia. He completed an internship in general surgery followed by a residency in head and neck surgery at the UC Irvine School of Medicine. Following residency, he completed a clinical fellowship in head and neck surgical oncology and microvascular reconstruction at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary and Massachusetts General Hospital in the Department of Otolaryngology at Harvard Medical School, where he served as Clinical Instructor.
